RENO, Nev. - Trailing 27-26 at halftime the University of Nevada men's basketball team outscored Cal Poly by 17-points, 39-22 in the second half to win its season opener 65-49 over the Mustangs. The Wolf Pack held CP to just 25 percent shooting in the second half and 41.1 percent for the game.
With the score tied at 28 with less than a minute gone in the second half the Pack went on a 17-4 run to build a 13-point cushion 45-32. The Mustangs were able to get within eight points on two occasions the rest of the game but the Pack's largest advantage of the game was 18 points with 28 seconds to play.
Nevada was led by sophomore guard D.J. Fenner who scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Junior point guard Marqueze Coleman added 11 points and senior shooting guard Michael Perez finished with 10 points on the night. Of the 11 players who saw action ten scored. Junior forward AJ West tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds and blocked six shots.
Reese Morgan led the Mustangs with a game-high 13 points off the bench and David Nwaba contributed 11. Maliik Love tied for game-high honors with his eight rebounds.
The Pack outrebounded CP 43-39. The Mustangs had 27 bench points and Nevada 24. In the paint the Wolf Pack outscored the Mustangs 30-18.
Nevada returns to action on Monday when Adams State comes to Lawlor Events Center for a 7 p.m. contest.
