RENO, Nev. - University of Nevada (5-8. 1-0 MW) junior forward AJ West posted a double-double and the Wolf Pack never trailed winning its Mountain West opener over Air Force (7-6, 0-2 MW) 80-62. Winners of three in a row the Pack improved to 5-8 on the season and 1-0 in the conference while Air Force dropped to 7-6 and 0-2 in MW play.
Nevada scored the first four points of the game and jumped out to an 18-5 advantage with 9:33 to play in the first half. The Pack increased the lead to 18 with 3:33 to go in the first period and led by 13-points, 34-21 at halftime.
Air Force connected on their 10 shots of the second half and closed the gap to nine points with 8:54 to go in the game. Nevada put together a 7-0 run to increase the lead back to 16 points and went on to win by 18, 80-62.
West posted his fourth double-double of the season and sixth of his career finishing with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior point guard Marqueze Coleman scored a career-high 18 points and made a career-best three 3-pointers in the game. West and Coleman each scored 12 points in the second half.
Sophomore guard D.J. Fenner was the third Pack player in double figures finishing with 17 points in the game. Senior guard Michael Perez made his 45th consecutive start and dished out a career-high eight assists to go along with his eight points.
The Falcons had three players in double figures led by Marek Olesinski's game-high 19 points. Justin Hammonds scored 14 points and Max Yon added 13 for Air Force.
After not scoring over 69 points in the first 10 games of the season Nevada has scored 80 during the three-game win streak. The Pack shot 48 percent from the field and AF 46. Nevada dominated the boards outrebounding the Falcons 38-25.
Nevada plays at intrastate rival UNLV on Wednesday at 8:05 p.m. The game will air on CBS Sports Network.
Men's Basketball Postgame Notes
Nevada improved 5-8 overall and 1-0 in MW play after defeating Air Force (7-6, 0-2 MW) 80-62 to begin Mountain West play today.
Nevada plays at intrastate rival UNLV on Wednesday at 8:05 p.m. PT. The game will air on CBS Sports Network and is part of the Governor's Series.
Nevada has won the last four games versus Air Force and leads the series 4-1.
The Wolf Pack is 1-0 in MW play for the second year in a row.
Nevada wore its road blue uniforms at home today to accommodate Air Force.
Nevada has won a season-high three in a row after dropping its previous eight.
The 48 percent shooting is the second best game of the season for Nevada. The high was 48.1 percent in the previous game against Northwest Christian.
Nevada has scored 80 or more points in the last three games after not reaching 70 in the first 10 games of the season.
The Pack's seven 3-pointers made is tied for the season high. Nevada also made seven in the previous game versus Northwest Christian.
The last time Nevada won three in a row was last season from Jan. 4-Jan11.
Junior point guard Marqueze Coleman scored a career-high 18 points and led the team in scoring for the third time this season. His three 3-pointer made is a career-high and ties Michael Perez for the high by a Nevada player this season.
Coleman has scored in double figures a team-high 10 times.
Freshman forward Robyn Missa scored a season-high nine points.
Junior forward AJ West posted his fourth double-double this season and sixth of his career finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The 13 rebounds is the sixth time he posted a game-high this season, fifth time he had double figure rebounds this season and ninth time in his career he reached double digits.
West has a block in every game this season.
D.J. Fenner netted 17 points giving the Pack three players in double figures.
Senior guard Michael Perez dished out a season-high eight assists to go along with his eight points. Perez is seven points from reaching 500 at Nevada.
Perez made his 45th consecutive start and D.J. Fenner played in his 45th consecutive game.
Nevada outrebounded an opponent for the eighth time this season and by double figures for the fifth time.
Head coach David Carter is now 94-83 in his sixth season at Nevada and 14-21 in MW play.
