RENO, Nev. (AP) J.J. O'Brien's three-point play with :51 left in the game lifted San Diego State past Nevada, 65-63, Wednesday night and allowed the Aztecs to keep pace with Wyoming atop the Mountain West Conference standings.

Nevada trailed by seven points with under three minutes to play, but Eric Cooper Jr. drilled a 3 to cut the deficit to 60-56 and another to make it 61-59. Michael Perez got to the basket for a layup to tie the game at 61-61 with 1:17 left.

After O'Brien pushed the Aztecs' lead back to three, AJ West scored on a layup to make it a one-point game with :16 left, but Trey Kell hit the second of two free throws to create the final margin.

O'Brien scored 18 points to lead San Diego State (18-5, 8-2 Mountain West).

Cooper finished with 17 points to lead the Wolf Pack (6-15, 2-7).


Men's Basketball Postgame Notes

Nevada is 6-15 overall and 2-7 in Mountain West play after falling 65-63 at home to conference co-leading San Diego State (18-5, 8-2 MW) tonight.

The Wolf Pack plays at San Jose State (2-20, 0-10 MW) on Saturday at 3 p.m. PT.

The Wolf Pack has lost its last seven games after starting MW play 2-0.

Freshman guard Eric Cooper, Jr. led the Pack with 17 points of which 13 came in the second half.

Junior AJ West scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to post his ninth double-double of the season and 11th of his career.

West has six double-doubles in nine MW games and was a rebound short in two of the other games from making it eight.

West has scored in double figures in the last 11 games. His 16 double figure scoring games on the season leads the team.

Junior Lucas Stivrins tied his career-high with nine points which also occurred earlier this season at Pacific. Stivrins made his first 3-pointer at Nevada in the first half.


West has led the Pack in rebound now 16 times and has nine double figure rebound games.

Head coach David Carter is now 95-90 in his sixth season at Nevada and 15-26 in his third season of MW play.
