RENO, Nev. – Nevada's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, in collaboration with Eddy House, launched on Monday "Gear Up For Good," a clothing and food drive as part of National Homeless Youth Awareness Month.
The drive will run through Wednesday, November 26, ending ahead of the Nov. 29 Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game between Nevada and UNLV at Mackay Stadium.
Spear-heading SAAC's involvement is Nevada Softball student-athlete and Reno native Karolyn Glover. While in high school, Glover volunteered with Eddy House, and her return to Reno after spending the first two seasons of her college career at Louisiana Tech reconnected her to the organization.
"I think the most rewarding thing about volunteering at the Eddy House was being able to be around a lot of people my age. That put into perspective the life that I have been given, and I'm extremely thankful for that as well as being able to give back to my community, an organization that is very important and a project that is not talked about enough here in Reno," Glover said. "As student-athletes, we can get caught up in our bubbles. It's very important to use our platform to lift others up--as President Sandoval says, when you hug this community it will hug you back."
Specific items that may be donated include shelf-stable, non-expired food, new socks, underwear, and bras, new hygiene items (travel or normal-sized), and backpacks, bags, and suitcases.
Drop-off locations on the University campus include Petersen Academic Center and Legacy Hall. Around Reno, public, off-campus drop-off locations include Camie Craig Fitness (3865 Mira Loma Dr.) and Custom Boat and Marine (9300 S. Virginia St.), with potentially more to come.
