Reno, Nev. - Don Weir Field at Peccole Park
WP: Jack Pezzolo (1-1)
LP: Jayce Dobie (1-2)
RENO, Nev. - Nevada scored seven times over the final two innings to pull within two of UC Davis, but it was not enough in an 11-9 loss Tuesday at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
Sean Yamaguchi hit both of his home runs during the rally, the first a three-run shot to open the scoring in Nevada's six-run eighth, and the second a solo shot to lead off the ninth.
Nevada's (17-12) ninth-inning rally was cut short in somber fashion. Pinch-hitter
Noah Blythe lined a two-out single to right-center, but suffered an injury rounding first and was tagged out to end the contest.
The Wolf Pack trailed 11-2 heading into the eighth before RBI singles from
Rominic Quiban and
Mikey Cruz Jr., along with an RBI double from
Junhyuk Kwon, supplemented Yamaguchi's first homer.
UC Davis (12-17) scored four times in the top of the fourth to open up a 7-1 lead, then added on with Ethan Felix's three-run homer in the seventh to take a 10-2 lead.
Yamaguchi had one of five multi-hit games for the Wolf Pack, driving in four runs while Quiban went 3-for-5 and scored twice.
Felix led a trio of Aggies putting up three hits apiece on the night.
Nevada returns to Mountain West play Friday night at Peccole Park, hosting San José State at 6:05 p.m. in the opener of a three-game weekend series.
